Japan Braces for AI Security Shift After Anthropic Model Suspension

The abrupt U.S. suspension of Anthropic’s Claude Mythos models has forced Tokyo to reassess its digital defenses, though Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama insisted Tuesday that the move poses no immediate threat to Japanese banking trials, which remain contained within closed test environments.

Japan Braces for AI Security Shift After Anthropic Model Suspension

Katayama confirmed that Japan has yet to receive a formal security assessment from Washington regarding the sudden global halt. The government intends to demand a comprehensive explanation during the upcoming G-7 summit on Wednesday. While current financial operations remain insulated, the incident has accelerated Tokyo’s push for indigenous defensive capabilities to mitigate future regulatory volatility.

Simultaneously, SoftBank Group is pivoting toward a localized security strategy. Chairman Masayoshi Son announced a new joint venture with OpenAI to deploy specialized cybersecurity services designed to shield Japan’s critical infrastructure, including power grids and transportation networks. By leveraging OpenAI’s models, these services aim to automate vulnerability detection and remediation for local entities. This shift underscores a broader strategic move to reduce reliance on external AI tools while hardening domestic systems against emerging digital threats.
