Mobileye Shifts Toward Full-Scale Robotaxi Operations in U.S.

Moving beyond its traditional role as a technology supplier, Mobileye plans to launch a proprietary robotaxi service in a major American city next year. The Intel-backed firm intends to deploy an initial fleet of 100 autonomous vehicles to test its ride-hailing model before pursuing a massive expansion.

Mobileye Shifts Toward Full-Scale Robotaxi Operations in U.S.

The company’s strategy hinges on integrating its internal autonomous driving software with the fleet management and rider service capabilities of its Moovit unit. While Mobileye will continue selling its Drive technology to automakers, this new venture represents a direct entry into the competitive autonomous ride-hailing market. Executives view the initial 2025 deployment as a controlled validation phase for fully driverless operations, with a target of scaling the fleet to approximately 17,000 vehicles within five years if performance metrics remain stable.

Amnon Shashua, founder and CEO of Mobileye, described the move as a critical step in a broader transportation revolution. Investors reacted positively to the announcement, with the company's stock climbing 5.2% to $10.02 in premarket trading. This rally offers a reprieve for shareholders, as the stock had previously suffered an 8.7% decline over the course of the year. The company has not yet disclosed which metropolitan area will host the pilot program.
