This year’s data reveals a clear trend toward decentralization in scholarly publishing. Among the 521 journals receiving a Journal Impact Factor for the first time, 58% are based outside the United States and Western Europe. Mainland China and the United States continue to lead in total author affiliations, accounting for nearly half of the global output. Notably, author representation from the Global South grew by 6% over the past year, with India seeing a 12% increase since 2023.
Bar Veinstein, President of Academia & Government at Clarivate, emphasized that the report aims to provide a publisher-neutral framework for evaluating influence. To prevent the misuse of metrics for assessing individual researchers, the platform offers field-normalized indicators like the Journal Citation Indicator alongside traditional data. These tools are intended to help librarians and publishers interpret journal performance within specific disciplinary contexts rather than relying solely on a single impact score.
