Logistics Industry Pedal Power Raises $100,000 for Autism Careers

A 26-mile ride from Lower Manhattan to Brighton Beach served as the backdrop for a milestone in corporate advocacy, as the 16th Annual Bike Tour with MTS for Autism successfully secured over $100,000. These funds support Spectrum Works, a nonprofit dedicated to training young adults with autism for long-term employment.

The logistics sector, often defined by its reliance on precision and consistency, has found a unique synergy with the skill sets of neurodivergent individuals. Since its inception 16 years ago, the annual bike event has generated more than $700,000, creating pathways for students to secure roles at major corporations including IKEA, Walgreens, and Rent the Runway. For Sedat Saka, president of the New York-based freight forwarder MTS Logistics, the initiative is a long-term commitment to reshaping the professional landscape for families affected by autism.

Spectrum Works Founder Ann Marie Sullivan highlighted the urgency behind the effort, noting that while autism diagnoses are common, the employment rate for autistic adults remains stagnant at roughly 15%. By bridging the gap between training and direct corporate placement, the partnership aims to transform these statistics. The June 13th event drew support from global shipping heavyweights such as Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd, alongside Turkish Airlines, which contributed prizes for participants. Beyond the fundraising total, the event serves as a platform for graduates of the program to share their success stories in fields ranging from assembly line logistics to fulfillment, proving that targeted support can lead to sustainable careers.
