Delta to Retrofit 240 Boeing 737NG Aircraft with VCT Finlets

Delta Air Lines will install aerodynamic finlets across its Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER fleet, a move expected to improve fuel efficiency for 240 aircraft. The decision follows extensive flight testing and engineering reviews conducted alongside Seattle-based Vortex Control Technologies to optimize airflow and reduce drag.

Finlets are specialized devices mounted on the aft fuselage designed to reshape airflow and minimize pressure distribution issues. By reducing flow separation, these modifications target a reduction in both fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The rollout follows a rigorous evaluation period that utilized computational fluid dynamics to validate performance gains on Delta’s existing 737NG fleet.

For Delta, the integration serves as a practical step toward meeting sustainability targets, given that approximately 90% of the airline’s carbon footprint stems from jet fuel consumption. Amelia DeLuca, Delta’s Chief Sustainability Officer, noted that the partnership reflects a broader strategy to adopt innovations that enhance performance while providing long-term operational benefits. Vortex Control Technologies, which has previously documented savings of tens of millions of gallons of fuel through its aerodynamic solutions, views the agreement as a significant milestone in scaling its technology for major commercial operators.
