Norway Taps ICEYE for Nationwide Satellite Flood Monitoring

Persistent cloud cover and complex terrain have long hindered Norway's ability to track severe weather from above. To solve this, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate has enlisted Finland’s ICEYE to deploy a satellite-based monitoring system capable of piercing through darkness and storms to map flood hazards in real-time.

The contract, finalized following a competitive tender, tasks ICEYE with providing continuous surveillance across mainland Norway and Svalbard. By leveraging its fleet of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, the company will deliver two distinct streams of intelligence: Flood Rapid Impact updates every six hours during active emergencies and detailed impact assessments every 24 hours.

This initiative marks a shift in how the directorate manages hydraulic risk. According to Torsten Starkloff, Flood Discipline Group Leader at NVE, the high-resolution data will be instrumental in calibrating forecasting models and refining hazard maps. The project, which began in February 2026, includes a one-year term with an option for a two-year extension. Beyond immediate emergency response, NVE plans to share the resulting insights with municipalities to bolster long-term infrastructure resilience and disaster preparedness.
