Traveling from Beijing to Shanghai aboard a Fuxing high-speed train, Min Aung Hlaing surveyed China’s infrastructure development, directly signaling his administration’s interest in expanding similar projects. The visit underscores a deepening dependency; China remains Myanmar’s largest trading partner and primary source of investment. Bilateral trade reached $19.4 billion in 2025, a 19.1% increase over the previous year, driven by Chinese exports of electromechanical equipment and imports of Myanmar’s agricultural and mineral goods.
During their meeting, President Xi Jinping emphasized the acceleration of flagship projects within the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, including the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone and the New Yangon City development. Beyond infrastructure, the two nations signed agreements spanning science, technology, public health, and media. A central focus of the dialogue was the combatting of cross-border crime, specifically telecom cyber fraud and online gambling. Both leaders committed to strengthening joint law-enforcement operations to secure the border regions and protect citizens from illicit digital networks.
