Groundbreaking Begins on Detroit’s First District 7 Community Center

Construction is officially underway at Rouge Park for the new Brennan Community Center, a $20 million project funded by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores. Designed to serve the Cody Rouge neighborhood, the 25,000-square-foot facility marks the first indoor space of its kind in Detroit’s District 7, slated for completion in fall 2027.

The facility aims to address a long-standing void in local infrastructure, providing a dedicated hub for youth development, mentorship, and workforce training. Beyond physical recreation, the center will host programs focusing on financial literacy and life skills, with input from community residents and Pistons staff shaping the interior design and service offerings. Mayor Mary Sheffield emphasized that the center fulfills a critical need for west-side families, who previously lacked a year-round indoor environment for community engagement.

Tom Gores intends for the project to extend beyond mere construction. He plans to mobilize the Detroit Pistons organization and corporate partners to sustain ongoing programming once the doors open. This initiative follows the team's recent completion of a six-year, 60-court basketball refurbishment project across the city. Brinker Group is managing the construction process, while Framework E serves as the lead architect, ensuring the building meets the specific aspirations of the Cody Rouge population.
