Terumo Completes First U.S. Procedure Using OPUSWAVE Imaging System

A team at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital has successfully performed the first U.S. procedure using the OPUSWAVE Dual Sensor Imaging System. Led by Dr. Annapoorna S. Kini, the operation marks a shift in coronary intervention by integrating two distinct imaging modalities into a single, high-performance catheter platform.

The OPUSWAVE system utilizes a DualView imaging catheter to combine Optical Frequency Domain Imaging (OFDI) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). By capturing both the deep vessel structure typically revealed by ultrasound and the precise surface detail provided by optical imaging, the device allows surgeons to view coronary anatomy in a single pass. This integration eliminates the need for clinicians to choose between depth and resolution during complex procedures.

Dr. Kini noted that the simultaneous availability of these two modalities fundamentally alters the approach to complex coronary cases, providing a more complete anatomical understanding. The catheter is engineered with a 2.6 Fr profile and 6 Fr guide compatibility, offering a 150 mm pullback length. Surgeons can toggle between IVUS-only, OFDI-only, or simultaneous dual imaging modes, a flexibility designed to maintain procedural efficiency while enhancing diagnostic confidence in treating coronary disease.
