The agreement follows Monday’s meeting in Brussels, the inaugural session of formal EU-China trade and investment talks. Sefcovic emphasized that the current trajectory of trade imbalances is unsustainable, signaling that the bloc is no longer willing to accept the status quo. The newly formed monitoring mechanism aims to facilitate data exchange and technical cooperation, specifically targeting transparency in trade flows.
Both delegations identified four critical pillars for future negotiation: rebalancing trade and investment, navigating export controls, protecting intellectual property rights, and pursuing reforms within the World Trade Organization. While the sides have committed to reconvening later this year, Sefcovic has set a concrete target of October 2026 to achieve tangible progress in these areas.
