Plug Power Lands Electrolyzer Deal for Australian Hydrogen Hub

A massive renewable energy shift is underway in Newcastle, Australia, where Orica has greenlit its Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub. The project, which has officially moved into construction, relies on Plug Power’s advanced membrane electrolyzers to decarbonize industrial manufacturing on Kooragang Island, marking a significant milestone for local green hydrogen production.

Plug Power Lands Electrolyzer Deal for Australian Hydrogen Hub

The facility will sit adjacent to Orica’s existing ammonia plant, utilizing renewable electricity to fuel the electrolysis process. By replacing natural gas with hydrogen in the production of ammonia and ammonium nitrate, the project aims to reduce the company's reliance on fossil fuels. According to Plug Power, the hub is expected to generate 4,700 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually once it reaches full operational capacity.

This transition will displace roughly 7.5% of Orica’s current natural gas consumption at the Kooragang Island site. While the companies have moved forward with the construction phase following a final investment decision, the specific financial details of the equipment supply contract remain undisclosed.
