Pentagon Turns to Detroit Roots for Next-Gen Tactical Mobility

Eighty years after its role as the Arsenal of Democracy, Southeast Michigan is reclaiming its status as the nation's strategic manufacturing hub. As the Department of Defense pivots toward commercial partnerships, the upcoming GVSETS 2026 symposium in Novi highlights the convergence of military requirements and private sector innovation.

The Ground Vehicle Systems Engineering & Technology Symposium, running August 11-13 at the Vibe Credit Union Showplace, serves as the primary nexus for military mobility development. The event sits within reach of the U.S. Army’s Tank-automotive and Armaments Command and the DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center—a cluster responsible for sustaining roughly 60% of the Army’s total equipment inventory.

This year’s iteration marks a departure from traditional defense-only gatherings. For the first time, venture capital firms will join Army leadership and established prime contractors to scout for mature commercial technologies that can be adapted for tactical use. According to GVSETS Chairman Col. (Ret.) Thom Green, the industry is entering a critical window where the mission relies on a broader coalition of engineers and innovators than previously utilized. Deputy Chair Eric Patton noted that the Army is actively seeking scalable commercial solutions to enhance the capability and intelligence of its ground fleets, positioning the event as the essential entry point for firms looking to integrate into the defense industrial base.
