Sizewell B Nuclear Plant to Run Until 2055 Under New Government Deal

The U.K. government has secured an agreement with Centrica and EDF to extend the lifespan of the Sizewell B nuclear power station by two decades. The deal guarantees a fixed price for the electricity generated by the Suffolk-based facility, ensuring it remains operational through 2055 to bolster national energy security.

Centrica, which holds a 20% stake in the plant alongside majority owner EDF, confirmed the 20-year contract for difference starting in April 2035. Under the terms, the government will guarantee a strike price of 70.50 pounds ($94.18) per megawatt-hour, protecting the station from volatile market fluctuations. This financial mechanism is designed to support low-carbon projects that face significant upfront capital requirements.

Sizewell B, the only pressurized water reactor in the United Kingdom, currently supplies roughly 3% of the nation’s electricity. To facilitate the extension, the operators have committed to an investment of approximately 800 million pounds in site upgrades. The contract is expected to reach final execution by the end of this year.
