Pet Care Industry Faces Growth Gap Despite Strong Customer Loyalty

A new benchmarking report reveals that despite steady industry momentum, a lack of investment in marketing and service expansion persists.

The survey of 457 operators, conducted by The Dog Gurus, IBPSA, and PocketSuite, highlights a disconnect between a devoted client base and operational growth. Although 60% of businesses saw revenue gains last year, nearly 14% of owners took no personal income, and a quarter reported that their earnings fail to meet personal needs. The data suggests that reliance on word-of-mouth remains high, with 59% of operators barely utilizing paid marketing channels.

Operational capacity also remains underutilized, particularly in training and grooming sectors where annual utilization often dips below 30%. Larger businesses earning over $1 million annually demonstrate that growth is possible through consistent investment in digital advertising and aggressive upselling of add-on services. According to Amber Burckhalter of The Dog Gurus, the industry foundation is robust, yet a significant gap remains between current operational realities and the potential for professionalized expansion. As the sector matures, leaders emphasize that access to concrete benchmarking data is now essential for owners to optimize pricing, staffing, and occupancy to reach the next level of profitability.
