Tamai Steamship Profits Plunge as Revenue Softens

Tamai Steamship Co. Ltd. reported a sharp decline in its nine-month bottom line, with net profit falling to ¥224 million from ¥2.05 billion a year earlier. The Japanese shipping firm faced significant headwinds during the period ending Dec. 31, as both revenue and operating margins tightened compared to the previous fiscal year.

Tamai Steamship Profits Plunge as Revenue Softens

The company’s top-line performance saw a notable contraction, with revenue sliding to ¥3.83 billion from ¥4.37 billion in the same period last year. This decline trickled down through the income statement, leading to an operating profit of ¥355 million, less than half of the ¥724 million recorded in the prior year.

Financial Performance Breakdown

The disparity between the two periods was even more pronounced at the pretax level, where earnings dropped to ¥335 million from ¥830 million. Despite the significant year-over-year decrease in total net income, the company's report filed under Japanese accounting standards listed earnings per share at ¥116.17, compared to ¥1.06 in the previous year.

The key financial metrics for the nine-month period include:

    • Total Revenue: ¥3.83 billion
    • Operating Profit: ¥355 million
    • Net Profit: ¥224 million
These results reflect a challenging environment for the Tokyo-listed carrier. While the company did not immediately detail the specific drivers behind the profit slump, the broader maritime industry has been navigating volatile freight rates and shifting global trade volumes throughout the fiscal year.
