The Accomack County Board of Supervisors awarded the expansion bid to the Dover-based energy company on Thursday. The project will be jumpstarted by a $6.5 million state grant provided through the county, which Chesapeake Utilities plans to allocate toward the first phase of development. This initial stage includes critical engineering, environmental permitting, land acquisition, and the finalization of capital investment estimates.
Expanding Regional Infrastructure
The proposed extension will bridge the gap between Maryland and Virginia, stretching from the outskirts of Princess Anne, Maryland, to Temperanceville, Virginia. By expanding this footprint, Chesapeake Utilities aims to create a more resilient energy corridor for the Eastern Shore, a region that has historically faced challenges with natural gas accessibility. The new system is designed to provide a steady energy supply to a diverse range of end-users. According to company statements, the pipeline will serve:
- Residential housing developments across the county
- Major regional employers and industrial sites
- The NASA Wallops Flight Facility
