BNP Paribas Targets 50% Cost-Income Ratio Through AI and Restructuring

Chief Executive Jean-Laurent Bonnafe outlined a long-term strategy for BNP Paribas this week, aiming to drive the bank’s cost-income ratio down to approximately 50%. The French lender plans to leverage artificial intelligence and organizational simplification to hit these efficiency targets as it moves past the 2027 fiscal year.

The bank expects its cost-income ratio to drop below 56% by 2028, with the pace of improvement set to accelerate to roughly two percentage points annually starting in 2027. Bonnafe confirmed these projections to analysts following the release of the bank's second-quarter earnings, signaling that the current cost-cutting program is central to the shift.

By streamlining operations and integrating automated technologies, the firm intends to sustain this downward trajectory in expenses long after the initial 2028 milestone. The strategy underscores a broader push within the European banking sector to offset market volatility through internal structural efficiency.
