Altimmune Rallies on Alcohol-Use Disorder Drug Trial Success

A 9.5% premarket surge in Altimmune shares follows positive Phase 2 clinical results for pemvidutide, a dual receptor agonist aimed at treating moderate-to-severe alcohol-use disorder. The rally offers a reprieve for the stock, which had suffered an 18% decline since the beginning of the year.

Altimmune Rallies on Alcohol-Use Disorder Drug Trial Success

The company reported that the trial met its primary endpoint, demonstrating a statistically significant reduction in heavy-drinking days compared to a placebo. Participants also showed improvement across key secondary measures, including lower World Health Organization risk drinking levels and reduced phosphatidyl ethanol markers. Altimmune intends to request an end-of-Phase 2 meeting with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to discuss the findings.

Chief Medical Officer Christophe Arbet-Engels noted that the drug’s glucagon component provides a liver-directed impact that could offer advantages over existing GLP-1 therapies alone. The treatment maintained a generally favorable tolerability profile throughout the study, bolstering the company's outlook for the drug’s potential in a challenging therapeutic market.
