The transition, slated for completion by year-end, marks a deliberate move toward a utility-centric earnings profile. CMS expects to derive nearly 100% of its income from utility operations starting in 2028. While abandoning broader development, the company will retain specific Michigan-based assets, including the Dearborn Industrial Generation plant and four existing solar projects.
Financial results for the recent quarter reflect the broader tightening, with profits sliding to $120 million, or 37 cents a share, down from $201 million a year prior. Revenue contracted slightly to $1.83 billion, missing analyst expectations of $1.87 billion. Despite the dip, adjusted earnings met the 37-cent mark, narrowly edging past the consensus forecast of 36 cents. Looking ahead, the company reaffirmed its 2026 guidance and set an adjusted earnings target of $4.08 to $4.17 per share for 2027.
