Job Seekers Are Using AI to Pad Resumes, Challenging HR Verification

Nearly three-quarters of HR professionals now struggle to distinguish genuine candidate qualifications from AI-generated fabrications, according to a new Equifax survey. As artificial intelligence makes it easier for applicants to embellish their histories, companies are increasingly finding their traditional vetting processes tested by sophisticated digital deception.

The survey of over 350 HR executives at the SHRM 2026 Annual Conference reveals a growing tension between technological efficiency and hiring integrity. While 78% of respondents credit AI with streamlining onboarding and administrative tasks, 36% admit that AI-generated content has actively eroded their confidence in hiring decisions. Half of all surveyed professionals cited employment history as the primary area where candidates frequently provide misleading information, while 35% reported encountering falsified credentials or educational backgrounds.

The Shift Toward Verification

Despite these hurdles, organizational confidence in detecting fraud has ticked upward, with 69% of leaders claiming they can identify bad data, compared to 63% last year. However, only 24% describe themselves as "very confident" in their current detection capabilities. Bart Lautenbach, Senior Vice President of Talent Solutions at Equifax, suggests that in a market where candidates use advanced tools to craft their personas, the only viable strategy is a rigorous "trust but verify" approach.

Beyond hiring, the survey highlights a pivot in HR priorities. Improving employee experience has eclipsed recruitment as the top workforce management challenge for 63% of respondents. As companies shift focus toward retaining existing staff, the demand for high-quality, verified data has become critical to maintaining compliance, a challenge that has risen to 27% in 2026. For HR teams, the path forward involves balancing the automation of routine tasks with the human judgment required to validate an increasingly digital applicant pool.
