The move follows a two-year surge in connection applications that has strained infrastructure capacity and obscured actual future energy needs.

Ofgem’s Director for Energy System Design and Development, Eleanor Warburton, emphasized that speculative applications currently block viable schemes and create unnecessary uncertainty. By enforcing this fiscal barrier, the regulator hopes to filter out non-viable projects that distort planning for the £24 billion grid expansion program approved last year. The consultation reflects a broader effort to prioritize projects that align with the UK’s energy security goals and renewable integration targets.
