Lydian Secures $43 Million to Scale Synthetic Aviation Fuel

Boston-based Lydian has closed a $43 million Series A round to accelerate the production of cost-competitive synthetic aviation fuel. Led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the funding will support the deployment of PIVOT, a standardized modular platform designed to slash capital costs and reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 95%.

The financing marks the inaugural investment from Breakthrough Energy Ventures' one world BEV Fund, which includes backing from major global airlines. PIVOT distinguishes itself from legacy gas-to-liquids technologies by utilizing factory-built, standardized modules. This modular approach aims to cut project development timelines by two years and enables facilities to operate efficiently alongside intermittent renewable energy sources.

Joe Rodden, CEO and co-founder of Lydian, noted that the system is purpose-built for the economic realities of modern power markets. By prioritizing lower capital intensity and operational flexibility, the company intends to make synthetic fuels price-competitive with biofuels within the decade. Lydian currently operates a pilot plant at its Boston R&D center and is targeting a commercial demonstration facility for 2028, with full-scale production slated for 2030.
