Cybersecurity Now Outweighs Price for American Digital Consumers

Nearly two-thirds of Americans are prepared to abandon their current mobile or broadband provider if a competitor offers superior digital protection. According to F-Secure’s latest Scam Intelligence & Impacts Report, the battle for market share is shifting away from traditional metrics like speed and cost toward fundamental online safety.

The data suggests that security has become a primary driver of consumer loyalty, with 93% of respondents marking it as an essential offering from their service providers. This pivot in behavior follows a surge in digital fraud, as 90% of Americans report experiencing at least one scam attempt over the past year, and 69% face such threats on a monthly basis. As these attacks grow more sophisticated, the financial toll has spiked, with 57% of victims reporting actual monetary loss—a significant jump from 17% in the previous year's study.

Demographic shifts also complicate the risk landscape. While adults aged 18 to 34 are three times more likely to encounter a scam, older users remain the most vulnerable to financial theft, with 82% of victims between 65 and 74 suffering a monetary hit. Timo Laaksonen, CEO of F-Secure, noted that connectivity is no longer the only benchmark for value. Consumers are increasingly demanding that the companies they trust act as a shield against the rising tide of AI-driven fraud, turning cybersecurity into a critical competitive advantage for service providers.
