Net income attributable to shareholders rose 1.4% to €2.05 billion, surpassing the €1.9 billion consensus estimate compiled by the company. Revenue climbed 7.7% to €7.36 billion, fueled by gains in asset management, investment banking, and retail operations in both France and Italy. While operating expenses increased 4.6% to €3.87 billion, analysts at Jefferies and Royal Bank of Canada highlighted the bank's broad-based revenue strength as a clear positive.
Despite the solid performance, Credit Agricole faces persistent pressure to manage costs while vying against U.S. investment giants and digital challengers. The bank’s strategic focus remains centered on Italy, its second-largest market. Having recently increased its stake in Banco BPM to 29.3%, the firm has effectively positioned itself as an unavoidable stakeholder in any future regional consolidation. Deputy Chief Executive Jerome Grivet underscored this influence during an earnings call, stating that no deal involving their assets could proceed without the bank’s involvement.
