The influx of capital signals a sustained appetite among pension funds and other long-term institutional players for private credit, even as headlines surrounding the asset class have grown more critical. Ares has successfully broadened its reach, with its roster of direct institutional investors more than tripling since 2019. CEO Michael Arougheti attributed the performance to consistent fund results, with the firm's credit segment alone securing $23.7 billion, bolstered by an $8.5 billion raise for its flagship asset-based finance fund.
While deal activity remains constrained by geopolitical uncertainty, Ares is preparing for a surge in activity. The firm currently sits on a record $170 billion in uninvested capital, or "dry powder," which management intends to deploy as the investment pipeline begins to pick up. This cache of capital not only positions the firm for future growth but also ensures a steady stream of fee-related earnings, which rose 20% to $491.1 million compared to the previous year. With after-tax realized income per share reaching $1.29, the firm’s ability to convert uninvested assets into management fees remains the primary engine for its ongoing profitability.
