Data from the China Electricity Council confirms that renewable energy now serves as the primary engine for new capacity, with non-fossil fuel sources accounting for over 70 percent of all nationwide power growth in the first half of 2026. Hou Wenjie, director of statistics at the council, noted that this surge in clean energy generation grew by 8.5 percent compared to the previous year.

Simultaneously, the National Energy Administration reports that coal’s contribution to actual electricity output dropped below 50 percent for the first time on record, averaging 49.7 percent during the same period. While wind and solar now generate nearly a quarter of the nation's total power, the transition remains nuanced.
