Swedish Pouch Maker ASF Targets South Africa for African Expansion

South Africa has become the latest battleground for the global nicotine pouch market as Sweden-based Another Snus Factory (ASF) launches its flagship brand, LOOP, in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The move signals a strategic push by the manufacturer to use the continent’s largest economy as a gateway for broader regional growth.

Partnering with local distributor Venture South (Pty) Ltd, the company is introducing three high-intensity variants: Jalapeño Lime, Red Chili Melon, and Habanero Mint. These products aim to capture local adult consumers by blending spicy notes with traditional fruit and mint profiles, leveraging the brand’s established popularity across Nordic markets including Sweden and Norway.

This expansion follows the December 2025 acquisition of ASF by a joint venture between South Korea’s KT&G and the U.S. tobacco firm Altria. For KT&G, the manufacturer behind the ESSE cigarette brand, the move represents a calculated shift to diversify its portfolio into the rapidly growing nicotine pouch category. By securing a foothold in South Africa, ASF intends to scale its distribution network in response to consumer demand, positioning the country as the primary anchor for its long-term operations across the African continent.
