The company’s shift toward the arid-climate succulent follows two decades of research into plant science. By transforming the rapidly renewable plant into high-performance material, Kimberly-Clark intends to reduce its reliance on traditional supply chains. Chief R&D Officer Craig Slavtcheff described the initiative as a moonshot that promises to deliver curve-bending performance while bolstering long-term growth and resource stewardship.
Beyond the laboratory, the project carries significant regional implications. Hesperaloe requires notably less water than many crops currently cultivated in the Southwest, potentially easing pressure on local water resources. To facilitate the transition, Kimberly-Clark is hiring specialized local talent and coordinating with growers and community stakeholders across Arizona and California to establish the plant as a year-round agricultural opportunity. While testing remains ongoing, the firm views this innovation as a cornerstone of its broader strategy to focus on high-value, differentiated product categories.
