Alibaba Investors Face Class Action Lawsuit Over AI and Defense Ties

Investors who purchased Alibaba Group Holding Limited securities between June 26, 2025, and June 24, 2026, face a critical deadline. The law firm Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP has opened registration for those seeking to serve as lead plaintiff in a federal class action lawsuit filed in the Southern District of New York.

The litigation, Wistisen v. Alibaba Group Holding Limited, alleges that the company and its executive leadership violated the Securities Exchange Act by concealing ties to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The complaint asserts that Alibaba failed to disclose its classification as a Chinese military company under the National Defense Authorization Act, a designation that triggered a nearly 4% drop in share prices after the U.S. Department of Defense updated its list on June 8, 2026.

Further legal pressure stems from allegations of intellectual property theft involving artificial intelligence. A Bloomberg report on June 24, 2026, revealed that the AI startup Anthropic accused operators linked to Alibaba’s Qwen lab of using adversarial distillation to scrape capabilities from the Claude model. Alibaba’s American Depositary Shares (ADSs) subsequently fell 2.7% on the day of the report and an additional 4.7% the following day. Investors interested in leading the case must file their applications by October 5, 2026.
