Umbra Secures NRO Sole-Source Contract for Radar Augmentation

The National Reconnaissance Office has awarded Santa Barbara-based space firm Umbra a sole-source contract for radar commercial augmentation, formalizing a partnership that has already delivered over 100,000 high-resolution images to U.S. intelligence agencies over the past four years.

Under the new firm-fixed-price agreement, Umbra will provide the NRO with assured, global tasking capacity for its synthetic aperture radar constellation. The deal includes a one-year base period with two additional one-year options, ensuring the agency maintains direct, low-latency access to radar imagery capable of penetrating all weather conditions, day or night. This contract follows four years of collaborative work between the company and the NRO’s Commercial Systems Program Office.

Umbra CEO David Langan described the award as a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to support national security missions. To meet the demands of the program, the company has recently scaled its physical footprint, opening a 20,000-square-foot engineering office in Reston, Virginia, alongside a 50,000-square-foot manufacturing site in California. This infrastructure expansion supports Umbra’s strategy to accelerate the deployment of its satellite constellation while maintaining end-to-end control over its sensor and spacecraft production.
