SM Energy to Clear Debt with $417 Million Note Redemption

Denver-based SM Energy Company will clear its 2027 senior debt obligations ahead of schedule, announcing a full redemption of the $417 million aggregate principal amount. The move, set for September 4, 2026, utilizes the company’s existing cash reserves to eliminate all senior note maturities until the middle of 2028.

The company has formally instructed the trustee overseeing the 6.625% Senior Notes to issue the redemption notice to all current holders. Beyond the principal amount, SM Energy will satisfy all accrued and unpaid interest through the September settlement date. This strategic maneuver leaves the firm with a clean debt maturity schedule for the next two years.

Operating across the Permian, DJ, South Texas, and Uinta basins, the company maintains its focus on capital discipline and shareholder returns. By clearing the 2027 notes, SM Energy significantly alters its financial profile, effectively removing interest obligations associated with those specific securities from its balance sheet well before their original maturity.
