When these products tear, they release gels, liquids, or sand that can cause internal blockages if swallowed or chemical burns upon contact with skin.

The agency specifically cautions against the viral practice of heating these toys. Squishy materials can reach extreme temperatures and burst, releasing sticky, hot substances that adhere to skin and worsen thermal injuries. Consumers are urged to inspect toys for chemical odors, oily surfaces, or signs of deterioration. If a burn occurs, the CPSC advises flushing the area with cool running water for 20 minutes and seeking medical attention, rather than using ice or home remedies.
