QC Ware Integrates Promethium Platform with IBM Quantum Processor

A 156-qubit Heron superconducting processor from IBM has powered a new hybrid computational chemistry workflow, demonstrating how quantum hardware can integrate with GPU-accelerated classical methods. Palo Alto-based software firm QC Ware utilized this setup to calculate the electrostatic interaction energy of nitric oxide reductase, a complex metalloenzyme.

The demonstration marks a shift toward practical applications for quantum-classical synergy, focusing on a molecule critical to research in drug discovery and catalysis. By pairing QC Ware’s Promethium platform with IBM’s hardware, the team successfully bridged classical molecular modeling with quantum measurements. While the current setup serves as a technology proof-of-concept rather than a fully integrated commercial product, it signals a path toward managing larger molecular systems that currently challenge standard computing architectures.

Promethium’s architecture is designed to handle demanding chemistry calculations up to 20 times faster than conventional platforms, potentially shrinking research timelines from weeks to hours. According to QC Ware co-founder Dr. Kin-Joe Sham, the goal remains to provide high-performance tools for immediate industry use while building the infrastructure necessary for future, more complex hybrid workflows. The company continues to position this research as a benchmark for evaluating how artificial intelligence and quantum computing can eventually tackle high-stakes scientific challenges in materials science and pharmaceutical development.
