A federal contract worth up to $4.5 million will propel Ceramedix closer to filing an Investigational New Drug application for its lead therapeutic. The New York-based firm is developing a first-in-class anti-ceramide antibody intended to treat gastrointestinal acute radiation syndrome in mass casualty scenarios.

The funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases supports ongoing nonclinical in vivo studies and critical Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls development. By targeting ceramide-rich platforms on endothelial cell membranes, the drug aims to block the signaling pathways that trigger cell death following lethal radiation exposure. This award builds on previous government-backed research, including contract 75N93023C00015 and an SBIR Phase 2b grant, reinforcing the federal commitment to medical countermeasures.

Operating out of the BIOLabs@NYU Langone accelerator in Long Island City, the company utilizes technology licensed from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Executive Chairman Charles Dimmler noted that the team is focused on the specialized demands of the GI-ARS program as they prepare for a formal FDA submission. The treatment is designed for subcutaneous administration, a feature specifically intended for rapid deployment during emergency medical events.
