Oil Prices Slide as Iran Ties Strait of Hormuz Access to U.S. Concessions

Global oil markets reacted sharply Tuesday as Tehran signaled a potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within one week, contingent upon the United States lifting its military blockade of Iranian ports and halting regional combat operations, according to a senior government official speaking to Kyodo News.

The news triggered a 3% decline in energy prices, pushing Brent Crude below $100 per barrel for the first time in seven days. By mid-day, the international benchmark sat at $98, while WTI Crude dropped to $91. This shift follows Iran’s communication of its conditions to Washington, which include the resumption of formal talks to permanently cease hostilities.

While Iranian officials are currently coordinating with intermediaries during the UN General Assembly in New York, any direct encounter between President Donald Trump and President Masoud Pezeshkian remains off the table. The proposal echoes recent demands from Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, who outlined seven prerequisites for negotiation, most notably the release of frozen Iranian assets. Despite the tentative optimism, the Iranian government emphasized that any meaningful progress requires Washington to demonstrate tangible commitment to de-escalation.
