Mercedes-Benz Recalls 12,000 EQB Electric SUVs Over Battery Fire Risk

Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for nearly 12,000 electric vehicles in the United States following warnings that high-voltage battery failures could cause fires while the cars are parked or in motion. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging owners to park affected vehicles outdoors and away from structures until a permanent fix is implemented.

The recall specifically targets the Mercedes-Benz EQB series, a cornerstone of the German automaker’s compact electric SUV lineup. According to the NHTSA, the defect involves the high-voltage battery system, which may malfunction and ignite regardless of whether the vehicle is operating or stationary.

Affected Models and Safety Protocols

The safety campaign covers approximately 12,000 vehicles across several configurations and production years:
  • EQB 250+ models manufactured between 2023 and 2024
  • EQB 300 4Matic models produced from 2022 to 2024
  • EQB 350 4Matic models produced from 2022 to 2024
Federal regulators have advised owners to take immediate precautions to reduce the risk of thermal runaway. In addition to parking outside, drivers are instructed to charge their vehicles to a maximum of 80% capacity. This limitation is designed to lower the energy density and heat generation within the battery cells during use and storage.

To resolve the issue, Mercedes-Benz dealers will perform a complete replacement of the high-voltage battery packs at no cost to owners. The company is expected to begin formal notifications to customers, providing instructions on how to coordinate the specialized service at authorized repair centers.
