Cambridge Heartwear Secures £184 Million NHS Cardiac Monitoring Deal

The National Health Service has awarded Cambridge Heartwear a £184 million contract to deploy HeartSense, a diagnostic-grade wearable designed to detect heart rhythm irregularities. This agreement aims to shift cardiovascular diagnostics from hospitals to the home, potentially reducing stroke risks and easing pressure on secondary care services across the UK.

The HeartSense device marks a departure from traditional monitoring by integrating multi-channel ECG technology with wireless charging and artificial intelligence. Engineered in Cambridge and manufactured in Britain, the wearable transmits real-time data directly to a patient's mobile phone. The system holds UKCA approval and ISO 13845 certification, with FDA 510(k) clearance currently pending.

Founder Professor Rameen Shakur emphasized that the technology fills a void in domestic manufacturing, noting that the company previously lacked a native UK ECG producer. By facilitating earlier intervention, the platform is designed to identify cardiovascular disease before conditions reach an acute stage. Integrated Care Boards will utilize the NHS Supply Chain agreement to roll out the devices across primary and secondary care settings, with a specific focus on increasing diagnostic accessibility within community environments.
