Blavatnik Awards Recognize Three Scientists with $250,000 Grants

Three early-career researchers have each been awarded $250,000 through the 2026 Blavatnik National Awards, an unrestricted prize honoring significant breakthroughs in chemistry, genetics, and bioengineering. Selected from a pool of 372 nominees, the winners were celebrated during the program's 20th anniversary gala at New York’s American Museum of Natural History.

The 2026 laureates include David Nagib of The Ohio State University, whose work in organic chemistry focuses on activating inert molecular bonds to streamline drug discovery. Patrick Hsu from the Arc Institute and Stanford University was recognized for his advancements in genome engineering, specifically his development of RNA-targeting enzymes and AI-driven biological design. Jonathan Rivnay, representing Northwestern University, received the honor for his pioneering research into soft, flexible bioelectronics capable of integrating with human tissue to create implantable treatment systems.

Since its inception in 2007, the Blavatnik Awards have distributed $21.5 million to 539 scientists, providing critical unrestricted funding that allows recipients to pursue high-risk research. The program, administered by The New York Academy of Sciences, has become a significant incubator for scientific talent; past honorees have gone on to secure prestigious academic chairs and election to national academies, while collectively launching companies valued at over $40 billion.
