Pharmactive’s Whole-Fruit Carob Shows Potential for Appetite Regulation

Two laboratory studies indicate that Csat®, a standardized carob-based ingredient, may enhance satiety and gut health by boosting short-chain fatty acid production. The research suggests that the product stimulates key appetite-regulating hormones, marking a potential shift in how botanical extracts are utilized for metabolic support.

The findings, published in Bioscience and the Journal of Functional Foods earlier this year, highlight the synergistic effect of Pharmactive’s whole-fruit composition. Unlike isolated carob fractions, Csat® combines galactomannans from seeds with inositols and gallic acid from pulp. In vitro testing demonstrated that this combination drives a stronger microbial response than individual components, leading to higher levels of acetate, propionate, and butyrate.

Beyond microbiome modulation, the ingredient triggers a significant enteroendocrine response. Researchers observed an increase in glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and cholecystokinin (CCK) following gastric digestion. These hormones are vital for signaling fullness to the brain, which may offer new avenues for weight management and blood sugar control. Lead researcher Iván Benito-Vázquez noted that these results provide the first evidence that standardized carob compounds can effectively modulate intestinal flora and hormone secretion in laboratory models. While these outcomes are promising, the company is now looking toward clinical trials to confirm whether the benefits translate directly to human physiology.
