Haslam College of Business Launches Institute for the Future of Business

As artificial intelligence and rapid technological shifts rewrite the rules of corporate operations, the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business has established the Institute for the Future of Business. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between academic research and the evolving, practical demands of the modern workforce.

Stephen L. Mangum, dean of the Haslam College of Business, frames the new institute as a strategic response to the volatility currently upending traditional business models. While the college’s inaugural AI Innovation Summit served as the initial catalyst, the institute adopts a broader mandate beyond any single technology. It focuses on pairing technological fluency with core human competencies, such as ethical decision-making and creative problem-solving, to prepare students and industry partners for long-term structural changes.

The institute operates as a collaborative hub, connecting corporate executives, faculty researchers, and students to tackle real-world challenges. According to Lindsay Mahony, assistant dean for entrepreneurship and strategic initiatives, the project is designed to convert theoretical discussions into actionable outcomes. Industry partners are expected to bring specific business hurdles to the table, which will subsequently serve as the foundation for classroom projects, faculty-led research, and experiential learning opportunities. By integrating these diverse stakeholders, the university intends to create a feedback loop where scholarship informs corporate strategy and industry needs sharpen academic curriculum.
