The massive influx of requests signals a shift in how organizations prioritize their digital footprint. While North America leads the charge with 864 applications, Europe follows with 506, reflecting a robust global appetite for specialized domain identifiers. These range from 333 brand-specific applications to smaller cohorts of community-based and geographic name requests. The expansion aims to foster diversity within the Domain Name System, moving beyond traditional suffixes to allow for strings aligned with specific cultural scripts and business goals.
Kurtis Lindqvist, CEO of ICANN, described the current data as a pivotal step toward building trusted online identities. The organization is now moving into a transition phase where applicants can finalize their choices. Following a two-week window for potential string replacements, ICANN will publish the final list on 17 November 2026. This precedes the formal community input and objection period, where stakeholders can weigh in on the proposed additions before they are integrated into the global internet infrastructure.
