Homebuilder Stocks Slide as Mortgage Rates Climb Past 7.5%

The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate has climbed to 7.55%, triggering a retreat in consumer-facing stocks. As borrowing costs tighten, the SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF dropped more than 2.5% in the latest session, deepening its year-to-date losses to over 9% as investors recalibrate expectations for the housing sector.

Constellation Brands reported an uptick in fiscal second-quarter earnings and sales, buoyed by robust beer consumption at bars and restaurants that successfully buffered against declining demand in grocery and liquor retail channels.

Separately, the regulatory environment for global alcohol producers is tightening. Japan’s four largest beer brewers confirmed they are under investigation by the country’s antitrust regulator. The probe focuses on potential violations of antimonopoly regulations, marking a significant legal hurdle for the major industry players involved.
