FranklinWH Battery Users in Iowa Join Alliant Energy Grid Program

Alliant Energy customers in Iowa who own FranklinWH home battery systems can now enroll in the Smart Hours program to earn up to $1,500 in upfront incentives. The initiative taps into residential storage to stabilize the grid during peak demand, paying homeowners for every kilowatt their system discharges.

Participants receive $100 per kilowatt-hour of battery capacity upon enrollment, alongside annual performance payments of $100 for each average kilowatt contributed to the network. The system operates automatically, dispatching stored energy when the utility signals a need, though owners retain control over how much power they keep in reserve for personal backup. To simplify the technical setup, FranklinWH partnered with energy technology firm Derapi to manage the integration between residential batteries and utility grid controls.

This deployment marks the 30th virtual power plant program for FranklinWH nationwide. The move comes as Iowa continues to lead the U.S. in wind energy production, which currently accounts for 63 percent of the state’s total electricity generation. By integrating these home systems, Alliant Energy aims to bolster grid resilience through decentralized storage rather than relying solely on traditional generation assets.
