TotalEnergies Expands Methane Mitigation Partnerships Globally

At the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter meeting in Abu Dhabi, TotalEnergies announced expanded technical collaborations with PETRONAS, SONANGOL, and Oil India Limited. The initiatives focus on deploying proprietary detection technologies and sharing operational expertise to help national energy firms reach near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.

TotalEnergies Expands Methane Mitigation Partnerships Globally

In Southeast Asia, TotalEnergies is joining PETRONAS, JOGMEC, and JGC Corporation to develop the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center (SEA METEC) in Malaysia. This regional hub will standardize measurement methodologies, utilizing insights from TotalEnergies' TADI facility in France. Simultaneously, the company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Angola’s SONANGOL to target flaring reduction, facility electrification, and improved greenhouse gas reporting, with potential backing from the World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Fund.

In India, the partnership with Oil India Limited (OIL) enters a new phase following an initial deployment of AUSEA drone-mounted sensors across 20 sites. A second campaign is set to extend this high-accuracy detection technology to additional infrastructure. These efforts reflect a broader industry shift toward collaborative environmental reporting, as companies aim to harmonize data collection across diverse industrial settings.
