Stationed at Alfredo Rodriguez Ballon Airport, the specialized aircraft serves as a mobile teaching facility. Clinical staff and volunteer medical experts are conducting a mix of simulation-based instruction and hands-on surgery. The curriculum targets critical subspecialties, including cataract and glaucoma treatment, oculoplastics, and medical retina, alongside essential training for nurses and biomedical engineers.
This marks the 15th visit to Peru for the organization, which seeks to integrate its efforts into the national health system. A significant portion of the volunteer faculty consists of Spanish-speaking experts from across Latin America, including practitioners from Lima and Trujillo. By utilizing regional expertise, Orbis aims to foster sustainable, culturally relevant care rather than temporary interventions. The initiative is backed by long-term partners, including Alcon, FedEx, and OMEGA, who provide the logistical, financial, and technical support necessary to maintain the flying hospital’s global operations.
