U.S. Senator Tim Kaine inaugurated the Congressional Debate portion of the event on Monday, addressing hundreds of high schoolers. The week-long schedule features 23 distinct categories ranging from traditional debate to public speaking and dramatic interpretation. Beyond the competition, the National Speech and Debate Association is set to honor Utah Governor Spencer Cox with its 2026 Communicator of the Year award for his efforts in promoting civil discourse. Additionally, businesswoman Sara Blakely will receive the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award, while CBS journalist David Begnaud is slated to emcee the final ceremonies later this week.

Local officials project the tournament will generate roughly $20 million in economic impact for the region. For the National Speech and Debate Association, the event represents a critical push to expand its reach. Executive Director J. Scott Wunn stated the organization aims to double its student participation to 200,000 within the next five years, emphasizing that the ability to think critically and listen with respect remains vital to democratic engagement. Attendees and supporters can view the final rounds of competition via a live stream provided on the association's website.
