The latest GSMA Mobile Economy Africa 2026 report reveals that the industry is pivoting toward high-value services. After a decade of expanding network infrastructure, operators are now repositioning themselves as digital transformation partners. Research indicates that 79% of African operators have identified this transition as their primary enterprise objective, increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence and standardized APIs to integrate digital services for businesses and governments.

Despite this growth, the industry faces the challenge of translating existing coverage into widespread digital inclusion. While the economic contribution is projected to reach $290 billion by 2030, current affordability remains a significant barrier for many users. GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath noted that the focus must move toward unlocking value through innovation while calling on the broader technology supply chain to help close the persistent usage gap.
