Tanker Giants Keep Distance From Strait of Hormuz Despite U.S.-Iran Deal

While diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Iran appear to be thawing, the world’s largest tanker operator is refusing to gamble on the Strait of Hormuz. Mitsui OSK Lines insists that concrete safety guarantees must precede any return to the critical maritime chokepoint, regardless of political headlines.

Tanker Giants Keep Distance From Strait of Hormuz Despite U.S.-Iran Deal

Jotaro Tamura, CEO of Mitsui OSK Lines, cautioned that shipping companies require more than a signed agreement before resuming standard transit. Even with the deal formalized, logistical hurdles including insurance coverage and practical security measures remain unresolved. Tamura estimated that a return to normalcy will likely take at least several weeks, if not a full month, to ensure the safety of crews and cargo.

This measured approach contrasts with recent claims from the White House. President Trump stated on Monday that vessels were already moving through the region, describing the Southern “Highway” as secure. However, industry analysts and major operators maintain that the transition will be gradual. Simply reaching a political consensus does not instantly mitigate the risks that have effectively choked oil and gas flows through the region for months.
