Snap Stakes Its Future on $2,195 Augmented Reality Glasses

Snap is betting that the era of the smartphone is waning, debuting a pair of augmented reality glasses priced at $2,195. The company intends to shift computing away from pocket-sized screens and into the physical world, positioning its new SPECS hardware as an essential tool for navigation and contextual AI assistance.

The device promises to integrate digital information directly into a user's environment, offering tools like spatial measurements, real-time directions, and virtual whiteboards. Chief Executive Evan Spiegel described the shift as a necessary evolution, noting that while smartphones tethered digital life to our pockets, these glasses aim to overlay computing onto the reality where users actually live and work.

Pre-orders are now open with a $200 refundable deposit, with shipments expected this fall across the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. This launch marks a significant pivot for the Snapchat operator, which previously struggled to find a mainstream audience for its earlier wearable experiments. After the 2016 debut of its original Spectacles faltered due to bloated inventory and misjudged market demand, Snap is attempting a more ambitious approach by targeting high-end utility rather than novelty.
