The collaboration addresses a critical gap in the national technology landscape: the need for high-performance computing that remains under local control and governance. By combining Bell AI Fabric’s data center capacity in Merritt, British Columbia, with NVIDIA-powered hardware manufactured locally by Hypertec, the companies intend to provide government and enterprise clients with a secure alternative to foreign-hosted systems. BUZZ HPC, a subsidiary of Hive Digital Technologies, will manage the AI-native cloud layer, facilitating the transition from research experimentation to production-grade deployment.
This initiative marks a shift in Canada's AI strategy, emphasizing that the scaling of artificial intelligence requires more than just software innovation. It demands physical factories—data centers and GPU clusters—capable of handling intensive model training and inference. For Cohere, the agreement provides a dedicated foundation to operate its large language models for domestic clients who prioritize data residency and security. The project seeks to ensure that intellectual property and economic benefits generated through AI development are retained within the country, strengthening Canada's competitive position in the global digital economy.
